The demand for a reliable and sustainable Dutch infrastructure is only increasing. There is also continuous work on improvements and maintenance along the track. This must of course be done in a safe manner. To guarantee this, the cable portals are protected with breakdown safety. It is very important that they comply with safety standards at all times. For a manager, this means annual inspection and control. Can this be done smarter?
Intelligent breakdown safety monitor railways

Approach
We have developed a custom device for this IoT solution. Because it is technology that is placed along the track, it must meet all kinds of safety standards. One of these is the requirement that it must be able to survive and ideally detect a large power surge from, for example, a lightning strike. For this purpose, the electronics are designed in such a way that they are heavily protected against high peak voltages at the measuring points, without losing measurement accuracy.
The new sensors were tested in practice through a pilot. During the pilot it became clear that both the installation and the measurement results were very useful for both the maintenance teams and the track manager of both the train and the metro.
In this case we have developed a customized solution Read how we work
Result
The result is a system that is prepared for serial production.
- The housing design is such that the sensor can withstand the environmental conditions of the railway environment: IP67 waterproof.
- The measured values provide an accurate representation of the available voltage potential thanks to a 24-bit ADC (analog to digital converter).
- The sensor continuously measures whether the breakdown protection is still functioning and provides a representation of the insulation value of the track compared to the subsurface at the sensor.
- The sensor communicates the measured information throughout the day
- The system automatically generates notifications when abnormalities are detected.
- All information from all bins is monitored 24/7 and brought together in one clear online cockpit.
This allows the rail asset manager to automatically receive notifications of important changes.
